Student Blog:
This week in room 107...
In math we took a mini test to end our unit in semester 1! We also got to review our unit before taking it.
We also resumed word study with a new sort and activities to go with it! We finished our open and closed sort
In reading we started our book clubs for our new historical fiction unit. We are reading parts from a nonfiction book called “The Chocolate Pilot” to learn more about operation vittles and The Berlin Airlift
In earth, science we learned about the earth’s rotation, the moons phases, and the sun, and we learned about how they work together.
We also continued table points! Where we get points with who we are sitting by and the group with the most points wins a prize! Also, we got our report cards to end our semester.

Items to Note:
- Please see click here for a letter regarding an exciting opportunity coming up for all fifth graders! The Oakland Coalition will be running a weekly Life Skills lesson in fifth grade classrooms the next eight weeks. The lessons will be every Friday.
- Click HERE for a note regarding Valentine's. If you are interested in sending a small snack (string cheese, fruit, cookie, etc) for the class for the Valentine please send me a quick email in what you would like to donate!
Weekly "How to Help at Home" Tip! :
- Multiplication practice! This next division unit really requires students to be fluid in their multiplication facts. Check out this presentation that came from Dragon University's Fact Fluency Presentation by Lake Orion's Math Specialist. She ran this presentation earlier this year and many parents found it to be helpful!
- We could use some HEALTHY SNACK donations! We are looking for individually packaged, peanut free snacks that can be stored in the classroom for when a child needs/ forgets to bring their own! Thank you in advance!
Academic and P2 Highlights for next week:
Positivity Project: On Monday, we'll begin learning about forgiveness -- which is the ability to move past being injured and accept that people make mistakes. This does not mean rolling over and allowing yourself to be harmed. It does not mean that you forget the transgression.
Math: Unit 5: Division of Whole NUmbers and Decimals. This unit will begin by students learning strategies to divide with double digit divisors. Students will need to be fluent in multiplication facts and multiplication with 2 digit factors.
Readers' Workshop: Students will be continue to read their historical fiction book as well as write about a theme with supporting evidence from their text.
Writers' Workshop: Students will be drafting their literary essay based on a short story of their choice!
Science: Students will be continuing to learn more about sun and starts to better understand the solar system. Our phenomenon addresses the question, "Why is the sun the only star we usually see in the daytime sky?"
Thanks for reading! Have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends!
