Summer Reading Opportunities: This is a LONG summer for the fifth graders! Don't let your child go through summer slide. Here are some links about options to get your child motivated about reading in the summer! Many students also created trailers on their SeeSaw account. Your child can check out the trailers to see which book they might to pick up this summer!
Notice and Note Notice and Note is a reading comprehension strategy learned in class. Students learn how to identify these signposts, then use the signposts to think deeper about their Fiction texts. Have your child use these straetgies at home to help build comprehension!
Importance of Reading at Home This link will take you to a website that provides some useful information about at home reading.
What can we do at home? At home, the best way your child can grow as a reader is to spend time reading! I suggest around 100 minutes of reading time a week outside of school. To further their understanding, ask your child questions about the theme, character motives, character traits, conflict, and predictions about the resolution. Your child could also write these ideas down on a sticky note or in a notebook. This helps your child understand story elements, as well as how to analyze a story.
If your child is in fluency lab, he/she should be reading those passages daily. Time them for one minute, and record the amount of correct words. The overall goal of fluency lab is to have children score higher on the COLD reads throughout the semester. Please note, Fluency Lab has NOT YET started for the year!
